Ferris Wheel, Dog First-Aid, Live Music Galore

The Alexandria Waterfront Festival is hardly a bore

Whether your kid is a kindergartner, a dog or a houseplant, this weekend you can celebrate Father's Day at the Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival at Oronoco Park (100 Pendleton St., Alexandria, VA).

All the standards are here: face painting, a Ferris wheel, carousel, the Dizzy Dragon and more. If you have kids of the non-furry variety, take 'em to the Children's Harbor Tent to make the perfect crafty Father's Day card.

Dogs (and their humans) should head to the Festival Pier to participate in canine activities including an American Red Cross Pet First-Aid demonstration, dog contests and vendors. Dog Zone hours are Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Left your Father's Day shopping to the last minute? Browse craft vendors -- but you'll need to keep your strength up while shopping. Good thing you'll find plenty of food vendors, too.

Want a more adult afternoon? No problem. Spend the day enjoying live, local music while nursing a glass of wine or beer at the Wine and Beer Garden. (See the full schedule of performers here.)

Sounds like a good time to us … now we're just praying for a break from this god-forsaken rain!
