Cats and Dogs, Living Together …

New best friends looking for home

ARLINGTON, Va. -- When animal control officers found a dog named Smiles along some Caroline County railroad tracks, the pooch's world had been shattered.

Smiles had watched as her best friend was struck and killed by a train. Smiles did not want to leave the dead dog's side, but was eventually taken by officers to a local animal shelter.

Since the dog area was full, Smiles was temporarily placed in the cat area. That's when one of the cats went up to Smiles, nuzzled her and comforted her, somehow knowing that the dog needed a friend.

The two have been inseparable ever since.

The cat, now named Amie (meaning "faithful friend" in French), and Smiles are looking for a home where they can be together. Homeward Trails Animal Rescue in Arlington has placed the pair in a foster home, but hopes that someone will step forward to provide them with a permanent home.

Homeward Trails is also looking for donations for Smiles' medical care, as she was nicked by the train that killed her friend and has nerve damage in her paw. She might not regain use of her paw, so a special home is needed.
