Current Stage: Peak Bloom

The time has finally come! On Friday, the cherry blossom trees on the National Mall entered peak bloom.

Predicted to occur between March 21 and 24, the blossoms opened up a day earlier than the revised prediction from the National Park Service.

The original forecast predicted peak bloom near March 27-30, but NPS explained in a tweet that temperatures over the last week had been warmer than expected and they expected the trend to continue.

NPS defines peak bloom as the day when 70% of Yoshino cherry blossoms are open. In the past, out-of-the-ordinary weather conditions have shifted peak bloom to as early as March 15, in 1990, and to as late as April 18, in 1958.

Yoshino cherry trees generally bloom for several days, with cool weather potentially extending the length of the blooming period. Temperatures dropping this weekend might help the blossoms stick around a bit longer.

NPS reminded the public in a tweet that despite the excitement around peak bloom, CDC guidelines must be followed when visiting the National Mall to prevent further spread of coronavirus.

WMATA said that Metro should be used for essential travel only, and that visiting the cherry blossoms does not constitute essential travel.

Yoshino cherry trees generally bloom for several days, with cool weather potentially extending the length of the blooming period.

Peak Bloom Projection

The peak bloom projection for the cherry blossoms on the National Mall was moved up to March 21-24.

The original forecast predicted peak bloom near March 27-30, but NPS explained in a tweet that temperatures over the last week had been warmer than expected and they expected this trend to continue.

“In the weeks since we made that initial announcement, we’ve had several days 10 degrees or higher than temperatures forecast. We’re looking at a continued warming trend for the next couple of weeks and that’s causing us to reassess and re-project,” said NPS Chief of Communications Mike Litterst.

NPS horticulturists monitored the buds’ development.

How to Avoid the Crowds

One major part of D.C.’s cherry blossom season are the overwhelming crowds of tourists and locals alike who flock to the National Mall to snap pictures of the blooms. An estimated 1.5 million people visit D.C. every year for the Cherry Blossom Festival.

As concerns over the coronavirus mount, many people may make more of an effort to avoid crowds during peak bloom. Luckily, with cherry trees all over the District, it’s possible to enjoy the blooms while practicing safe social distancing.

Here’s a map of all the cherry trees in D.C. that aren’t in major hotspots like the Tidal Basin and along the National Mall. For some, enjoying the blossoms can be as simple as walking a few blocks from your front door.

General admission tickets are set to go on sale Friday at 10 a.m., LiveNation says.

This is the Foo Fighters’ third iteration of their Jam Festival, which was held in California two years in a row.

Now, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is bringing it to his storied stomping grounds. Grohl went to high school in Northern Virginia and said he’s been to hundreds of shows at D.C.’s 9:30 Club.

Headliner Pharrell is also a Virginia native.

D.C. Jam will be coming soon, the band teased on their social pages over the weekend.

This wouldn’t be the Foo Fighters’ first “Jam” festival. They hosted the one-day CalJam in San Bernadino, California, in 2017 and 2018.

The Foo Fighters are gearing up for a 25th-anniversary tour, called “The Van Tour,” this spring and summer through the U.S. and Europe. The band has announced one date near D.C., for the Something in the Water Festival in Virginia Beach.

The “Best of You” musicians didn’t offer any further details on the D.C. show, but fans were quick to look for clues. Some wondered if the band would do another performance around the Fourth of July, remembering when the Foo Fighters celebrated their 20th anniversary with a festival at RFK Stadium.

The D.C. area is near and dear to frontman Dave Grohl’s heart. He went to high school in Northern Virginia and has said he went to hundreds of shows at the 9:30 Club. He even wrote a song, “Arlandria,” referencing the Alexandria neighborhood.

The National Children’s Museum opens Monday, with fun, interactive exhibits that let kids control the weather on a green screen, design and race a toy car or vote on which pet is best.

Parts of the museum also honor its hometown, including with a station that teaches kids to throw a fastball like the Nationals’ own Stephen Strasburg.

Because D.C. doesn’t have a dedicated science and technology museum, curators have incorporated a STEAM focus meant to engage and educate kids up to 12, CEO and president Crystal Bowyer told News4.

D.C. Public Schools students are expected to be some of the first visitors when its doors open Monday.

The museum is set to be open daily, except for major holidays, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10.95 for adults and kids over 1 year old.

Entry is through timed tickets, so visitors are advised to check online heading to the museum, which is located at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

A few more things are yet to come, including a museum cafe.

This is the first Children’s Museum to open in D.C. in 17 years.

The singer, rapper and producer contacted the city last year asking how he could help after the mass shooting at a municipal building in May, Deputy City Manager Ron Williams told The Virginian-Pilot. That led to a a multi-year plan involving the singer in tourism and economic development initiatives, he said.

As part of that, Pharrell Williams will narrate two 60-second commercials with his soon-to-be-released song, “Virginia.”

The spring tourism campaign will also include window signs as well as items from the singer’s clothing lines emblazoned with a “We’re open” slogan.

First lady Melania Trump announced this year’s date for the time-honored tradition. Tickets are free and can be requested through an online lottery that opened on Feb. 18. It will close at 10 a.m. EST on Feb. 24.

The White House says winners will be notified by email by March 4. Entering the lottery is free of charge. The Easter Egg Roll is an annual tradition that dates to 1878 and the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes.

But one small-town business has nearly 15 times that amount of followers online.

Located off South Main Street, Chad Comer and Josh Shifflett opened Blue Ribbon Nursery and Landscaping in 2006 after years of experience in landscaping and yard work. Since breaking ground, the business owners have built quite the following on social media — more than 58,000 likes on Facebook to be exact.

“We saw a need for (the business) here in the county,” Shifflett said.

The pair transformed an abandoned feed mill into a home for a variety of plants, flowers, trees, shrubs and decorative items such as custom wreaths, flags and gardening equipment.

While Shifflett is not from Broadway, he was convinced by Comer, who is a native of the town.

“Broadway is a great community and, at the time, they didn’t have a landscaping business here,” Comer said.

Every item at the nursery has been personally selected by Comer and Shifflett to provide the best service possible.

“We take much pride and time picking out merchandise, so it is not the same as any other place,” Comer said. “We have a personal touch, and we do a better job.”

Twelve months out of the year, the nursery’s exterior is lined with vibrant annuals, perennials and seasonal flowers and plants, along with the occasional produce stand during the warmer seasons.

If lucky enough, customers can run into various animals on the property as there are a number of cats and two golden retrievers that add an extra treat to a shopper’s trip.

And while it may be easy to get sidetracked by the amount of items available outside, it is a whole different world indoors.

“A lot of people think we just sell outdoor stuff,” Comer said. “But you need to come inside and look because I don’t think people know what we have to offer.”

Up a set of stairs is a door that leads to the indoor plants that can be found year-round. From peace lilies to poinsettias during winter, plant enthusiasts can decorate their outdoor garden and indoor space.

Through another set of doors is a room filled with seasonal merchandise, custom-made wreaths to showcase any day of the year and Christmas decorations.

With such a large following on social media, Comer and Shifflett host giveaways where anyone can participate.

“We try to appeal to everyone,” Comer said. “And we really are supportive of the community.”

#StillWe is intended to evoke a sense of resilience, resistance and unity while acknowledging progress still needs to be made to achieve LGBTQ+ equality, organizers say.

“With the adversity facing so many members of the LGBTQ+ community in mind, we will come together to support each other, show our love of community and unite in resistance against those who would deny us equality and dignity,” Capital Pride Alliance Executive Director Ryan Bos said in a statement.

The logo incorporates colors from the traditional rainbow pride flag alongside blue and pink to represent the trans pride flag. Black and brown stripes to represent the diverse intersectionality in the LGQTQ+ community, said Capital Pride Alliance’s Ashley Smith.

Nearly one million people are expected to celebrate the full spectrum of love and sexuality during June’s Capital Pride Celebration in D.C. The city tradition has been going strong for 45 years.

But D.C.-area chef Mr. Food Fantastic — also known as Chef Jumoke Jackson — has shared with News4 some recipes perfect for Sunday’s game.

Jackson has drafted some delicious wings that have a distinctly Asian flair for the San Francisco 49ers’ starting lineup, then a super simple Slow Cooker BBQ Biscuit Sliders to round out the menu. And don’t forget one of the simplest — but still over-the-top tasty — recipes on this list: the sourdough lasagna grilled cheese.

Representing Kansas City is a regional classic that you just have to try: cinnamon rolls topped with meaty KC chili.

Kansas City Chili

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb. boneless pork shoulder
• Tastic spice, to taste
• ¹⁄₃ cup light brown sugar
• 2 tsp. garlic powder
• 1 tsp. ground cumin
• 2 (12-oz.) bottles pale ale-style beer
• 6 oz. sliced bacon, finely chopped
• 10 cloves garlic, finely chopped
• 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and finely chopped
• 1 large Vidalia onion, finely chopped
• 1 large red bell pepper, finely chopped
• ¹⁄₄ cup tomato paste
• 3 tbsp. dark red chile powder
• ¹⁄₂ tbsp. Aleppo pepper
• 1 tsp. crushed red chile flakes
• 2 bay leaves
• 2 cups chicken stock
• 2 (28-oz.) cans whole peeled tomatoes, crushed
• 2 (15.5-oz.) cans dark red kidney beans, drained
• 2 tbsp. hot sauce
• 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
• Sliced scallions, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 500°. Place pork in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish and season with salt and pepper. Rub with brown sugar, garlic powder, and cumin. Bake until browned, 30–35 minutes. Reduce heat to 300°. Add 1 bottle of beer and cover tightly with aluminum foil; bake until pork is very tender, about 2 hours. Let meat rest for 20 minutes, then shred.
2. Heat bacon in an 8-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook until fat is rendered, 8–10 minutes. Add garlic, jalapeño, onion, and bell pepper; cook until soft, 10–12 minutes. Add tomato paste, chili powder, chile flakes, and bay leaves; cook until lightly caramelized, about 3 minutes. Add remaining bottle of beer, plus stock, tomatoes, and beans; boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, covered slightly, until beans are very tender and chili is slightly thick, 1 ¹⁄₂–2 hours. Stir in shredded pork, plus hot sauce and Worcestershire. Garnish with scallions or any toppings of your choice.

Cinnamon Rolls with Maple Bourbon Coffee Frosting

INGREDIENTS

For the cinnamon rolls:

• 2 cups whole milk
• ½ cup vegetable oil
• ½ cup granulated sugar
• 1 (.25 ounce) package Active Dry Yeast
• 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour, separated
• ½ teaspoon (heaping) baking powder
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon salt

For the filling:

• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted for greasing pans
• 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
• ⅔ cups granulated sugar
• 3 tablespoons Tastic sweet

For the maple frosting:

• 8 ounces powdered sugar, sifted (1 cup)
• ½ teaspoon maple flavoring
• 2 tablespoons milk
• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
• 1 tablespoon strong brewed coffee
• 1 tablespoon Bourbon
• pinch of salt

DIRECTIONS

To make the cinnamon roll dough:

1. Mix the milk, vegetable oil and sugar in a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat just until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture reaches 95-100 F (lukewarm) on an instant-read thermometer. Remove from the heat and pour into a large mixing bowl. Cool, if needed, until the milk reaches 95° to 100° F on an instant-read thermometer.
2. Sprinkle the yeast over the lukewarm milk mixture and set aside for 5-10 minutes. Add 4 cups of the flour and stir until combined (you can do this by hand with a wooden spoon or use the dough hook of a stand mixer). Cover and let rise for one hour in a warm location. The mixture should be bubbly and puffed.
3. In a small bowl or 1 cup measure, combine the remaining ½ cup of flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir together until blended. Add the flour mixture to the dough and mix until all flour is incorporated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate overnight, or for a day or two, if desired. If rising for more than a day, watch the dough and punch down if needed to prevent overflowing.

To make the cinnamon rolls:

1. Grease 3 (9-inch) cake pans with melted butter, set aside.
2. Heavily flour a large, clean work surface. Lightly punch down the dough and scrape out onto the countertop. Using floured hands, and a floured rolling pin, press and roll the dough into a rectangle at least 30-inches wide and about 18 to 20-inches deep. The dough will be very thin.
3. Brush 12 tablespoons of melted butter over the surface of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border along the 30-inch side farthest away from you.
4. Sprinkle ⅔ cup of sugar over the butter layer, followed by the Tastic sweet.
5. Roll the dough into a log starting at the 30-inch side closest to you. Gently pull the dough toward you, then tuck and roll, and repeat, keeping it pretty tight as you go. Next, pinch the seams to seal.
6. Using a ruler as a guide, cut the rolls into (30) 1-inch slices. You can use a large, thin, sharp knife to cut the rolls, or a long piece of dental floss works very well, too. Place the rolls, cut side down, into the prepared pans.
7. Preheat oven to 375° F.
8. Let the rolls rise in a warm location for 30 to 40 minutes. Once risen, the unbaked rolls should be puffed and smooth. To ensure the rolls have risen properly, gently press the edge of a roll with a knuckle. If the dough does not quickly and completely fill back into the depression, the rolls are ready. Bake at 375° F until light golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.
9. Transfer the pans to a rack to cool while preparing the frosting.

To make the frosting:

1. Using an electric mixer or whisk, combine the frosting ingredients and blend until smooth. The frosting should be thick, but pourable. Generously drizzle over the warm rolls. Feel free to go a little crazy and don’t skimp on the frosting. Serve immediately.

Sourdough Lasagna Grilled Cheese

INGREDIENTS

• 1/4 cup butter, for grilling bread
• 8 slices sourdough bread
• 1/2 jar marinara sauce (26-oz.)
• 1 container ricotta (14-oz.)
• 2 tablespoons grated parmesan
• 1 tablespoon dried parsley or basil
• 1 tablespoon Tastic spice
• 2 c. shredded mozzarella

DIRECTIONS

1. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread, putting each slice butter-side-down on a platter or piece of parchment paper.
2. Combine ricotta, parmesan, dried herb and Tastic spice in small bowl.
3. Spread marinara sauce on each slice of bread, then slather on ricotta mixture. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on every other sandwich, then assemble sandwiches.
4. In a frying pan over medium heat, grill sandwiches until each side is lightly golden and the cheese has melted, 1 to 2 minutes per side.
5. Let sandwiches sit for 10 minutes before cutting them into bite-sized pieces. (This keeps the ricotta from spilling out everywhere.) If serving later, place them on a baking sheet in a 200° oven until guests arrive.
6. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

49er Wings

INGREDIENTS

for 4 servings
• ¾ cup cornstarch, divided
• 2 lb chicken wings, rinsed and patted dry
• ¼ cup all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1 tablespoon Old Bay
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• 2 tablespoons Tastic spice
• ⅔ cup water
• peanut or vegetable oil, for frying
• ranch or blue cheese dip, for serving
• 1 stalk celery sticks, for serving, cut into sticks
• For 49er sauce
• 1 cup buffalo sauce
• 2 tablespoons Old Bay
• 2 tablespoons melted butter
• 1 tablespoon red curry paste
• ½ juice of an orange

DIRECTIONS

1. In a bowl, toss ¼ cup of cornstarch and the chicken wings together until fully coated. Transfer the wings to a wire rack and let rest and dry out for 20 minutes, ideally in the fridge if you have space.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the remaining ½ cup of cornstarch, the flour, paprika, Tastic spice and baking powder. Gradually whisk in the water, breaking up any lumps and mixing until smooth. The batter should be slightly runny.
3. Heat the oil in a large pot until it reaches 350°F (180°C).
4. Coat chicken wings in the batter, shaking off any excess. Add the wings to the oil in batches, cooking for 8-10 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the chicken wings wot a wire rack set over a paper towel-lined baking sheet.
5. In a small bowl combine 49er sauce ingredients and mix well.
6. Transfer the chicken to a clean bowl and drizzle with with 49er sauce, tossing to coat. Transfer to a serving plate. Serve with either ranch or blue cheese dressing and celery sticks.
7. Enjoy!

Slow Cooker BBQ Biscuit Sliders

INGREDIENTS

• 2 pounds pork tenderloin or pork shoulder or pork butt
• 1 12: oz can of soda (or any beer if you’d like)
• Plenty of Tastic spice
• 1 cup Kansas style BBQ sauce, or more, depending on how saucy you like your pulled pork

DIRECTIONS

1. Rub your entire piece of pork with Tastic spice. Then place your pork in the crockpot and pour the soda over top of the pork.
2. Set your crockpot on low and cook for 6 hours.
3. After 6 hours, place pork on large cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes. You can discard any liquid inside the crockpot insert.
4. Using a fork or tongs, shred the pork and place back into the crockpot insert.
5. Put BBQ sauce on top of shredded pork and toss to coat completely.
6. Serve on toasted biscuits (regular size or sliders).

“Most people in Quidditch know about Harry Potter, but we are athletes,” said Heather Farnan, who plays the position of beater.  “We’re playing a contact sport.”

The University of Maryland Quidditch team is one of the best in the country, currently ranked fourth in U.S. Quidditch, the organizing body of the sport. Last year, the team won its fourth consecutive Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, and it’s going for gold at the 2020 US Quidditch Cup.

In the “Harry Potter” books and movies, the sport is played on flying broomsticks — something that’s not exactly possible in the non-magical realm. Instead, players are required to keep a PVC pipe between their legs at all times.

“The stick between your legs thing is very awkward but once you get into it, it’s pretty easy to learn how to keep your legs together and catch with two hands,” said John Sheridan, team captain of Maryland Quidditch.

Whether you’re swooping through the air or running around on a field, though: “You have to be athletic,” Sheridan said. “Being athletic automatically makes a good Quidditch team.”

A Growing Sport

Sheridan said the Harry Potter factor had no impact on him wanting to play Quidditch.

“I just wanted to play a sport,” Sheridan said. “And we’re pretty good too, so it’s always good to be part of a winning team when you represent the university.”

The U.S. Quidditch organization currently consists of 150 teams and about 3,500 players nationwide. It hosts regional championships and a national tournament, known as the U.S. Quidditch Cup.

They’re not all university teams; some are adult teams and youth teams. In the D.C. area, George Mason is the only other university to have a team.

Mack Morgan, who’s been playing Quidditch for four years, got interested in the sport when he saw the national championship featured on Snapchat.

“It came from ‘Harry Potter,’ but I think it’s taken a few steps to make it more of a legit sport rather than how it was in the beginning,” said Morgan. “It is very competitive now.”

The muggle (that is, non-magical) version of Quidditch began in 2005 at Middlebury College in Vermont. At the time, players showed up to play wearing capes and one player even used a lamp as a broom.

The Rules

Players describe Quidditch as a combination of rugby, handball, lacrosse and basketball.

Each team has seven players on the field playing with one volleyball and three dodgeballs. The players are required to keep a pipe between their legs at all times.

A PVC pipe is used instead of a broom because it makes it safer for players to tackle each other in the full-contact sport. Players said no other sport could have prepared them for running with a pipe between their legs.

“It looks pretty stupid, but it’s really strategic,” Farnan said.

As a beater, Farnan said she has to think about catching a ball with one or two hands, while staying on the pipe.

The aim is to get a slightly deflated volleyball (a substitute for a ball known as the quaffle in the books) into one of the opposing team’s three rings — while avoiding being hit by dodgeballs (bludgers in the books). Each quaffle through the hoop scores 10 points.

“There are multiple games inside of the game,” Sheridan said. “There’s a snitch that comes out and then it’s just another game inside another game. It’s a very in-depth sport.”

The snitch is a tiny winged orb in the books. In real-life Quidditch, though, the snitch is represented by a “neutral” player who has the ball attached to their waistband as they run around the field, trying not to get captured either team’s seeker. The team that catches the snitch is awarded 30 points and ends the game.

Farnan said she would categorize the Maryland Quidditch team as Gryffindor, one of the houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, for the team’s bravery and heart.

“We are not shifty like Slytherins; we are not always smart like a Ravenclaw, but we are out there and we are giving it 110 percent all the time,” Farnan said.

Temperatures will be the high 60s Saturday and Sunday — but expect rain during parts of the day. Check the Storm Team4 forecast to plan when to spend time outside.

The museum, which is dedicated to the First Amendment, has seen 850,000 visitors every year. But with general admission set at nearly $25 for adults and nearly $15 for kids, the Newseum has struggled to compete with free museums in the District.

All of the Newseum’s historic artifacts, including the huge facade, will go into storage. The Freedom Forum, the Newseum’s primary funder and creator, hopes to reopen it at another location but has not announced a plan.

40th Annual National Menorah Lighting on The Ellipse

Mark the beginning of Hannukah near the White House by watching the National Menorah Lighting. It’s free and open tot he public, but you need a ticket.

The longtime stage manager for the iconic performing arts venue is retiring at the end of the year.

“From the very first day I saw this beautiful venue, I fell in love with it,” Grimes said.

When he first applied for the technical director position at The Barns in 1983, the venue had only been open for 18 months. He had been working as a carpenter, building props at Arena Stage and the Shakespeare Theatre since getting out of college.

“I didn’t know at the time, but I was presented with the opportunity to grow up together with this fantastic venue,” he said.

As The Barns and its young stage manager grew up over the next four decades, Grimes got the opportunity to live out his dream of working with some of the greatest artists of our generation.

While Grimes doesn’t like to rate his favorite shows, he will drop a few names when pressed.

“A 19- or 20-year-old Harry Connick Jr. when he first appeared here with his trio, John Jennings and Jon Carroll with special guest vocalist Mary Chapin Carpenter right before she hit it big, Stéphane Grappelli, Tony Bennett with the Ralph Sharon Trio, David Crosby, Graham Nash.”

“A lot of my adolescent heroes I’ve gotten to work with. I feel very privileged to be able to fulfill my dreams that way,” Grimes recalls.

Grimes fell in love with The Barns for all that the venue offers to performers and to the tens of thousands of fans who come through the doors. One of the things he loves the most is the variety, or what he calls “the magic.”

“It’s everything from chamber music completely un-amplified to major bands, road artists, and rock ‘n’ roll. That’s the magic of The Barns, the sound of this room accommodates all that music,” Grimes says.

While Grimes is a fan of all that variety, he’s honest about one of the genres that’s a staple at The Barns.

“When I first started here, I wouldn’t walk across the street to see an opera. But I tell you what, I love opera now.”

Grimes smiles proudly as he points to the Grammy nomination he and his colleagues received for an opera recorded at Wolf Trap in 2009.

As for what Grimes means to the thousands of performers he’s worked with, Ron Newmyer, a musician and concert promoter with BandHouse Gigs who’s produced more than 20 sold-out shows at The Barns and worked with Grimes for more than 10 years, calls him “the consummate pro” who encourages young artists.

“We were still figuring out what was possible and we threw some crazy stuff at him on those first shows — ‘Bob, oh by the way, there are 63 of us on the show; hope that’s cool,’ or ‘hey Bob, we’d like to stage some of the songs off the stage and with strolling performers, OK?'” Newmyer recalled.

“He dealt with all of that and managed to gently steer us to a more manageable approach while still helping us achieve our vision for what the shows could be in that wonderful building,” Newmyer said. “The Barns has such a warm homey feel, which is a credit to the entire staff but is personified in Bob at the sound board, and that has made it a perfect place for the shows. Bob is a music lover first and foremost and though he’s undoubtedly heard it all, he never phones it in and he still gets excited and lets you know when it’s right… and that’s exactly what you want back there.”

Over the course of his 36 years and more than 3,200 shows at The Barns, Grimes has only missed a handful of nights. He recalls coming down with the flu in his early years. He still managed to get in and set the stage and the sound board but couldn’t make it through the show.

The following week, Wolf Trap approved the hiring of an assistant for Grimes.

Even when he needed an emergency root canal, he still made it to the show. His wife had to drive him to work because he was so high on painkillers.

Grimes recalls the band mentioning his condition during the show.

“They kept introducing me from the stage as their sound man who was on drugs and that night it was true,” he said with a laugh.

He even made it to work the night his daughter was born.

“We got Annalisa home.” Grimes recounts, “I got everybody taken care of at home and I came in to do the show. Comedian Harry Anderson was performing. He announced the birth of my daughter to the audience and said she looked just like me, all green and scaly.”

Speaking of his family, Grimes beams with pride sitting at his desk working beneath a poster for one his wife’s novels.

“I’m very fortunate to have married my wonderful Linda who supported this career and made it possible to work here.”

Grimes says The Barns is in good hands with his longtime assistant Tim McCormick taking over as stage manager.

“Its going to be your problem now,” he told McCormick with a chuckle as they walked through the theater.

Grimes doesn’t plan on spending too much time catching shows at The Barns in his retirement, but he is excited to finally be able to see some shows at The Filene Center, Wolf Trap’s summer stage. While The Barns are only open from October through May, it’s a year-round job planning for the more than 100 shows each season.

But when asked what he’ll be doing come 2020, Grimes quips with a familiar sentiment of retirees.

“Whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it.”

Tickets bought online will be digitally delivered for all concerts, shows and season tickets for the Wizards and Caps (beginning during the playoffs season), arena owner Monumental Sports and Entertainment announced Wednesday. That starts on Jan. 1, 2020.

Capital One Arena uses Ticketmaster as its ticketing vendor. A spokesperson for monumental says you won’t necessarily need to download the Ticketmaster app, but most attendees will need to make an account with them. Event attendees can download the Ticketmaster app or log in to their Ticketmaster account via the web browser, a spokesperson said.

Customers will still be able to transfer or resell tickets through Ticketmaster, a spokesperson said. If you sell your ticket on another platform, such as Facebook or Craigslist, you will be allowed to transfer your ticket, they said.

There are options for people who don’t have smartphones, but they will need to call guest services at 202-292-1988. Tickets bought at the box office will also still be paper tickets, a spokesperson said.

Monumental says the mobile-only ticket policy protects fans from scammers and will streamline entry into Capital One Arena.

The Daily Progress reports the 11,000-acre Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County has added 10 new snow guns with a greater range of working temperatures.

Wintergreen also added a new cellphone app to provide information about trails, conditions and lift lines. The app also has a GPS feature that can track a skier’s location so friends can find each other

Andrés, a longtime Washington-area resident born in Spain, has been widely applauded for the work his charity does to feed those in need and was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Less than a year ago, Andres fed furloughed federal workers here in the Washington area. 

The disaster-relief portion of World Central Kitchen began after Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti in 2016. 

Since then, Andrés and World Central Kitchen have responded to over a dozen different areas affected by natural disasters. Andres stresses the value of a freshly-cooked meal in troubling times and strives to incorporate local ingredients and recipes where possible in his relief work.

Andrés responded to the Person of the Year honor on Twitter, saying, “Everywhere @WCKitchen activates around the world, kids are our inspiration.” He said he was humbled and thankful for the award.

The chef also evoked President Donald Trump’s response to the TIME Person of the Year Greta Thunberg. Trump had tweeted that the young climate activist had an anger management problem.

Andrés tweeted at President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, saying “let’s all join and respect the children of the world.”

The lineup was first announced Thursday at schools in Virginia Beach, where festival organizer Pharrell Williams went to high school, news outlets report.

Performers for the seven-day April festival also include Nelly, Migos, Usher, Playboi Carti, Trey Songz, Tierra Whack, Foo Fighters, Gunna, Snoh Aalegra and others. It’s possible the announced lineup isn’t complete, as the inaugural festival featured several surprise performances, news reports say.

Tickets for Virginia residents and return attendees went on sale on Oct. 19 and sold out before the day ended. General ticket sales open Saturday at noon.

Soak up a night of holiday wonder at Nationals Park’s Enchant Christmas (pictured in lead image), which organizers say is the largest Christmas light maze and market in the world. Wind your way through the luminous arches and sculptures donned with hundreds of Christmas lights, go ice-skating or wait for Santa to stop by for a visit and pictures. ‘A Christmas Carol’ at Ford’s Theatre (through Jan. 1)

Catch a perennial holiday classic at Ford’s Theatre, which is bringing a “music-infused” edition of “A Christmas Carol” to the stage. Tickets start at $32 for some performances.

Winter Walk of Lights (through Jan. 5)

Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia, plays host to a half-mile-long Winter Walk of Lights each year. Pathway of Peace on the White House Ellipse (through Jan. 1)

If you haven’t already scored tickets for the Dec. 5 tree lighting ceremony outside the White House, you won’t be able to attend. But you can still view the lighting display nightly on the adjacent Ellipse from Dec. 9 to Jan. 1. Called the Pathway of Peace, the walkway surrounding the National Christmas Tree will feature 56 state and territory trees decorated with unique handmade ornaments. In addition, you can catch free 30-minute music and dance performances on the Ellipse stage (Dec. 11-15; Dec. 17-22).

Waterskiing Santa (Dec. 24)

What’s Christmas without a little bit of quirk? Every year on Christmas Eve, Water Skiing Santa attracts a crowd as he glides along the Potomac at the Old Town waterfront. Planners say the best viewing area is the Alexandria City Marina and Waterfront Park. Stick around for a meet-and-greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Dupont Circle frozen yogurt shop announced that the shop will close in October.

The frozen yogurt shop said on their Facebook page on Tuesday that while they are sad the store is closing, they are looking for a new owner who is willing to buy the store. The price? A whopping $1. 

The store, owned by SpaceX director Steve Davis, is known for its wacky discounts like scoring 20 percent off yogurt by doing the “Thriller” dance. 

Customers also could get a flavor named after them if they order frozen yogurt for 30 consecutive days.

Davis opened the shop in 2008 before waves of frozen yogurt shops popped up across the D.C. area, according to an article by DCist.

The weeklong toast to beer began Sunday, Aug. 19 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 26. 

Breweries, restaurants and bars in the D.C. area are serving all types of craft beer as part of the 10th annual event. You can go to beer yoga, and get a beer float.

The Heurich House Museum in Dupont Circle is holding a panel from 6 to 8 p.m. with the artists behind the logos as part of their “The Art of Beer” exhibition. Attendees can taste the featured beers and snacks. Admission costs $15 and includes drinks and snacks. The exhibition will run until Sept. 29.

Pizza and Pints

Grab pizza and a pint for $10 at Glen’s Garden Market on S Street as DC Beer Week comes to a close.

But director Stephanie Stebich says video games are right at home in the downtown D.C. museum. 

“It’s not really a question of if video games could be considered art and in an art museum setting,” Stebich told News4. “It was really a question of when.”

Visitors to the museum will have the chance to play video games on Sunday, right in the SAAM’s Kogod Courtyard. 

With the help of game developers and gaming organizations, the museum is set to bring in vintage consoles, virtual reality technology and arcade machines.

The games in the SAAM Arcade this time, in the event’s fourth year, use space creatively in the game’s development, transform real-world space or inspire strong community spaces. Game-makers entered a contest to participate. 

“We wanted to have some more focus that really showcased the artistic aspects of game development,” museum spokeswoman Sara Snyder said. 

The selected games range from physical games to games featuring virtual reality technology.

“Line Wobbler,” one of the museum director’s favorite games there, is a one-dimensional dungeon crawler game made of several meters of LED strips and a joystick made from door stopper springs. Players use a joystick to navigate obstacles illuminated by the LED strip and attack enemies.

Ever-changing virtual reality (VR) technology also will have a presence in some games at the Arcade.

“Walden” is a VR game where players can experience some of what philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote about. Players survive in the woods of Walden Pond, in Massachusetts.

The puzzle VR game “Luna” follows the journey of a bird finding its way back home while solving a puzzle of a fragmented moon. Players solve puzzles to build musical terrariums by hand. The pop-art style of the game was inspired by the northern California coast, game developer Robin Hunicke said.

Hunicke said she created “Luna” after studying the effects of childhood trauma and as part of her own recovery as a victim of sexual assault and sexual harassment.

“I wanted to create a fairy tale that lets go,” she said. 

In addition to being a showcase for creative games, the SAAM Arcade will take a trip down memory lane, back to when game consoles like Atari 2600 were part of many households. 

SAAM will transform their Great Hall into a 1980s living room where players can use vintage consoles in vintage settings. Museum staff will “temporarily reconfigure the furniture and move things around in such a way that you feel like you’re really in an ’80s basement,” Snyder said. 

Not only is SAAM shipping in 1980s vintage consoles, the museum also is preparing for the infrastructure needed for the games, like extra wiring and a boosted network. 

SAAM is aiming to get the public involved in creating video games too. Visitors can start to learn how to code in a free workshop run by Boolean Girl, a nonprofit that teaches girls coding skills. That will take place from 4 to 6 p.m., in the MacMillan Education Center.

There’s a little something for everyone, Stebich, the museum director said. 

“What’s the beauty of this program is that we bring both the contemporary and the historical together, and that allows us to mix audiences,” she said. 

The SAAM Arcade will be held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s main building on Sunday, July 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free. The museum is located at 8th and F streets NW.
