Tiny Cornfield Pops Up on Northwest D.C. Lawn

Man grows corn for tortillas, tamales

A tiny cornfield has sprouted in an unlikely place.

Jose Machedo planted a cornfield in the front yard of his row house on Hamilton Street in northwest D.C. just a couple of blocks off busy Georgia Avenue.

He's watered and tended the garden for the past three months, and now he's got plans for all those ears of corn: Tortillas and tamales.

Machedo said he misses the food in his native El Salvador and this is how they do it at home.
