A couple of drinks, a dump truck and a drive-thru restaurant was a recipe for disaster, and a Montgomery County man is paying the price for a series of bad decisions.

Brian Mangum, 43, is accused of stealing a dump truck from Hartman Construction Company in Derwood where he worked, drove it to a McDonald’s in Damascus and crashed it at the drive-thru lane.

“The car went through the drive-thru and broke the roof of the drive-thru, and he’s parked in the front,” a caller told the 911 dispatcher.

In court Thursday, Mangum pleaded guilty to breaking into his boss’s office and stealing the truck.

“The moral to the story, Pat, is just because you’re hungry and looking for a cheeseburger doesn’t mean you should steal a dump truck to get it,” said Ramon Korionoff of the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Mangum also is charged with DUI. Police said they found a bottle of alcohol in the stolen truck.

At Hartman Construction, they said Mangum has misused company trucks before.

“I told him from the get-go that I would trust him like family until he proved me wrong,” owner Don Hartman said.

Mangum is facing a 10-year sentence in the dump truck case, but he also is facing a probation violation and that DUI.
