Deer Rescued from Seal Tank

A deer took an unexpected swim in Norwalk.

A deer took an unexpected swim in the seal tank at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk on Tuesday and it caused some excitement for aquarium employees and visitors for about half an hour.

An employee was feeding the seals during a public feeding at 1:45 p.m. and noticed a reflection in the window from the outside of the tank that did not belong, Dave Sigworth, of the aquarium, said. A small deer was in the water.

The seals were safely in the inside part of the display, where they were being fed, and employees kept them there and began the deer rescue mission.

They tried a net. That didn't work.

Then they placed a ramp in the water and set down a blanket down so the deer could get enough traction to get out of the gate.

It was a success. The deer was able free, unscathed and off to drier ground.

The entire rescue took about 20 to 30 minutes.

Aquarium officials think the deer swam across the river to get to the aquarium and again to get away.
No seals were hurt.

Part of the rescue is posted on YouTube, thanks to Lee Riesinger, who recorded it and a friend who uploaded it to the site.
