Service Interrupted: Blackberry Blackout Sweeps America

Research in Motion reports outages for second time in a week

Blackberry users across the U.S. were left twiddling their thumbs for hours Tuesday, unable to receive e-mail and other wireless services for the second time in a week.

"BlackBerry customers in the Americas are experiencing delays in message delivery. Technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue for those impacted," Canada-based Research in Motion said in a statement Tuesday evening.

The manufacturer did not offer a timetable for the fix. It was unclear if service has been restored to all affected users.

The problems began Tuesday afternoon when users reported that e-mail, Blackberry messenger and other data based applications were not working on the hand-held devices. Telephone and text messaging service was not affected by the outage.

The interrupted service appeared to be affecting users on all major wireless carriers. AT&T confirmed the problem is a statement that said the company is "aware that RIM is currently experiencing an outage that may be affecting some of our customers using BlackBerry devices."

On Dec. 17th, RIM reported a brief outage for e-mail delivery on Blackberry phones. That was resolved within hours, according to Bloomberg.com.
