Washington Capitals Release 2012-13 Schedule

It may be late June and a sweltering 100 degrees outside, but that shouldn't stop you from looking forward to the 2012-13 NHL season (in fact, I'd be willing to bet that the first place most of you would rather be right now is at a freezing ice rink, but I'm not a betting man).

That being said, the league has officially released next season's schedule, and the Washington Capitals will open their season* Friday, October 12, against the New Jersey Devils at Verizon Center.

Here are some other schedule highlights:

  • The Caps will face Bruce Boudreau's Anaheim Ducks February 13 in Anaheim, There will be no meeting in D.C. this season.
  • Washington will play on Super Bowl Sunday for the fourth consecutive year February 3 at Verizon Center when it hosts the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings.
  • The first game against the Boston Bruins since the teams' first-round playoff series will take place November 2.
  • The Caps will face the Pittsburgh Penguins on two month-ending holidays: Halloween in D.C. and New Year's Eve in Pittsburgh.
  • The longest homestand of the season is five games from December 11-20.

*Of course, all of this depends on the league and the NHL Players' Association agreeing on a new collective bargaining agreement, which expires September 15. But you already knew that.
