When D.C. United plays Real Madrid at 3 p.m. Sunday, soccer fans might have an easier time getting to FedEx Field in Landover Sunday than Sir Paul McCartney's fans did last weekend.
The Arena Drive/Capital Beltway interchange, which has been closed for construction, will be opened temporarily, starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The Maryland State Highway Administration recommends taking the Central Avenue connection vs. Landover Road to minimize delays, Dr. Gridlock reports.
With more than five times the attendance of an average MLS match expected, that's a good thing. Figure out how to get there in advance by punching up car or public transport directions to FedEx Field.
Dr. Gridlock says he thinks Metro's Blue Line to Morgan Boulevard Station is the best bet. We're sure it is too -- if you don't mind walking a mile to the stadium. (Dr. Gridlock must be in better shape than we are.)
Speaking of Metro, the transit agency says it will have extra trains on standby after the game to handle the crowds. (Think that'll mean fewer delays on the tracks? Boy, have we got a deal on the Key Bridge for you...)
This is the first time Real Madrid -- "one of the largest and most successful soccer teams in the world" -- has made it to Washington for a match. United is billing the match as "The Kinds of Spain vs. the Giants of MLS," Redskins.com reports.
