Simultaneous Success of Nats, O's a Historic Happening

Both the Nationals and Orioles will take the field Wednesday night in first place in their respective divisions, a matter of historic significance.

This is the latest into a season that both of the region's baseball teams have been in first place at the same time. Since the Nationals moved from Montreal for the 2005 season, neither they nor the Orioles have even posted a winning record, with the Nats' 81-81 mark in 2005 being the best either club finished in that time.

History shows having both D.C. and Baltimore teams winning, much less in first place, is an extremely rare occurrence. If you add in both versions of the old Washington Senators, who competed with the Orioles in the American League for 18 seasons, only once did both cities have a winning team — in 1969.

The Nationals have already clinched a winning season, while the Orioles need just three more wins to do so.  The O's are tied for first with the Yankees in the AL East, while the Nationals hold a 7.5 game lead on Atlanta in the NL East.
