Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid took to the U.S. Senate floor Thursday to denounce the Redskins' name -- as well as its owner, Dan Snyder.
Reid, (D-Nev.) spoke after a U.S. District Court ruled Wednesday to sustain a decision to take away federal trademark protection for the team name.
“The Washington football team name is disparaging. It's racist and morally objectionable,” Reid said.
Reid, who represents a state with 27 Native American tribes, also likened those who support the team’s name to those who defend the Confederate flag in South Carolina.
“The federal government should not protect a team or company that has pride in hearing every time their name is mentioned a racial slur,” he added, “Fairness, no racism, no bigotry, no intolerance, that's the game. ... There is no place for that kind of tradition in the National Football League and no place for it in our great country."
