It seems like just yesterday that the Washington Redskins were 3-6 and head coach Mike Shanahan was already throwing in the towel, but Griffmas has come early this year as the 'Skins improved to 6-6 after a 17-16 victory over the New York Giants Monday.
As noted Monday, the Redskins' victory was their first at home on Monday Night Football since 1997, snapping a 10-game losing streak, the longest of its kind in NFL history. It also happened to be their first win on MNF over the Giants since Lawrence Taylor broke Joe Theismann's leg in 1985. Gross.
So in honor of that, here are more records and skids that Washington shattered and snapped Monday.
- The Redskins have won three straight games over NFC East rivals for the first time since Weeks 15-17 of 2005.
- Not to be outdone, Washington has won three straight games period for the first time since a four-game winning streak during Weeks 2-5 of 2008.
- Robert Griffin III passed for 163 yards and Alfred Morris rushed for 124, respectively, making the Redskins the first team in NFL history to have a rookie passer with 2,000 yards and a rookie rusher with 1,000 yards in the same season.
- RGIII broke another record Monday, setting the NFL record for rushing yards by a rookie quarterback with 714. It was set last year by Carolina's Cam Newton, who ran for 706.
- New York's 26-game road winning streak when leading at halftime was snapped. It was an NFL record. The last time the Giants, who led 13-10 at halftime, lost such a game was Nov. 26, 2006 against Tennessee.
But perhaps the most important result of Monday's win was that Washington is now just one game behind New York for first place in the NFC East. The 'Skins have not won a division championship since 1999, which was also the last time they hosted a playoff game. More skid snaps could be on the way.
