Wizards Sign Former Maryland Star Alex Len for Center Depth

The Wizards have added some much-needed depth to their frontcourt by signing center Alex Len, who was recently waived by the Toronto Raptors.

Len, 27, passed through waivers before signing a one-year minimum contract with the Wizards, NBC Sports Washington was told. A minimum deal allows Len to continue being paid on the $2.3 million contract he had with Toronto.

The signing, which was first reported by The Athletic, gives the Wizards a third center along with Robin Lopez and Moe Wagner. Their original starting center, Thomas Bryant, suffered a partially torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

Len was the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of the University of Maryland and has since bounced around the league, playing for four different teams. This is his fourth team in just the past two seasons.

His career averages of 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game are not spectacular, but his best skill is rebounding and the Wizards could use help in that area. He has averaged 11.4 rebounds per-36 minutes in his career and the Wizards are currently 23rd in total rebounding.

The Wizards needed help at center especially right now with six players missing due to the league's health and safety protocol. They have had six consecutive games postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak on their roster and have in recent days been practicing with only one center, Lopez.

Len should give them an extra body down low and, with Wagner out in protocol, could play significant minutes right away.
