Washington Potomacs: Should Washington football team choose DC-themed name?

Among the most popular new name options for the Washington football team, few are directly associated with the team's home city, Washington D.C.

It's a decision we've seen teams make in the past in an effort to identify with their fan base. The Nationals and Capitals both have DC-themed names, while the Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Pistons and Pittsburgh Steelers are out-of-town examples of teams embracing aspects of their cities in their names.

If Washington decided to go in that direction as well and didn't want to go with a government theme like the hockey and baseball team, could "Potomacs" work?

A designer named Andrew Harrington submitted a concept for Potomacs seven years ago in a rebrand contest. His design didn't win, but it's easily the best concept art we could find for this name.

As you can see, the design keeps the burgundy and gold intact, utilizes the popular spear logo on the helmet and has a "W" as the primary logo. This is similar to the Washington football team's new logo, so if they wanted to take on this design they would only have to make minor tweaks to an essential part of it.

Potomacs is obviously inspired by the Potomac River, a 405-mile long river that runs from the Potomac Highlands in Maryland, through Washington D.C. and into the Chesapeake Bay. It is one of the most notable landmarks associated with the city aside from the monuments at the National Mall.

While this probably isn't going to be the most popular option out there, especially with the insane following Red Wolves has garnered. But it appears this one can give the team some flexibility on the theme. For those hoping for less of an overhaul with the franchise's likeness, this could an avenue that could work.
