Washington football team erases ‘Redskins' from social media accounts

The Washington football team officially made a name change Thursday, just not a permanent one. The franchise settled for "Washington Football Team" to replace their old name, and in case there was any doubt left, "Redskins" was completely removed from the team's social media accounts.

The team's new Twitter handle is @WashingtonNFL while the new "W" logo is featured as the profile picture.

The same goes for the team's Instagram account

It appears they've begun to transition their Facebook account toward their new name, but "Redskins" hasn't been removed completely just yet. The logo is new, the handle is new, the page name remains the same, however.

Some criticized the franchise's decision to not exclude "Redskins" from their announcement that they would retire the name. Now whenever the team releases a statement or makes an official announcement, they will do it as the Washington football team.

While the team hasn't moved completely to a permanent new name just yet, Thursday will mark the final day the franchise referred to itself as the "Redskins."
