Washington Football Team DC Jack Del Rio explains why he's so active on Twitter

In his first several months as the Washington Football Team's defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio has found himself in multiple headlines.

However, these headlines have had little to do with actual football. Rather, Del Rio has sparked controversy for sharing some of his personal opinions on Twitter.

In an exclusive interview with The Athletic's Ben Standig, Del Rio said why he's so active on the social media platform.

"I am open to discuss at any time with anyone my thoughts and respectfully have exchanges," Del Rio told Standig. "It's just not always possible in today's environment. I think it's important to be able to have your own opinion and respect for each other."

Del Rio stressed that he's fine with others having different opinions than him and is open to having conversations with anyone who has views on things that aren't similar to his.

"People may have an opinion that is different than mine, which is okay," Del Rio said. "I'm okay with actually having a conversation about it with anyone, including my players."

In June, Del Rio sparked controversy on the platform after showing support for President Donald Trump just days after Trump said he was likely to boycott football if players kneel for the national anthem.

On that same day, the defensive coordinator also shared his opinion on whether football should be played this fall in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the interview with Standig, Del Rio said he has "personal views that would probably not sit well with my professional occupation right now" when asked about players choosing to opt-out of the 2020 season.

Thus far, only two Washington players have decided to skip the 2020 season due to the pandemic, defensive lineman Caleb Brantley and linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons.

However, the defensive coordinator has not only used Twitter to share his political viewpoints and opinions. Earlier this offseason, Del Rio expressed his desire for Washington to bring back white-on-white uniforms, something many fans of the team have been asking about for years.
