Robert Griffin III Has Embraced Mentor Role But Plans to Start Again One Day

RG3 has embraced mentor role but plans to start again originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Robert Griffin III wants people to know he isn't preparing to be a backup quarterback forever.

That's what he told a couple of Tennesse Titans in Will Compton and Taylor Lewan, who host a Barstool Sports podcast called "Bussin' With The Boys."

"I’m not wired to be a backup," Griffin said on the podcast's latest episode. "I don’t plan on being a backup forever.”

While RG3 was content with accepting a mentorship role to help Lamar Jackson acclimate to the Ravens and NFL's high demands (something he's done quite well considering Jackson's unanimous MVP campaign last season), it's important to hear Griffin hasn't lost his competitive edge.

It was that sort of competitive edge that helped him win a Heisman at Baylor and become a D.C. sports folklore legend with that magical rookie season. These days, however, Griffin is staying prepared to take advantage of his chance when it comes next.

That's what helped Griffin make the Ravens roster two years ago, he told the podcast, preparation. In Baltimore's third preseason game against the Dolphins, head coach John Harbaugh told Griffin he wouldn't dress. Griffin didn't practice that week either. He said he remained focused, though, just in case his number was called.

Harbaugh told him the morning of the game he'd be out there with the starters. Against the then-No. 1-ranked Miami defense, Griffin was solid. It's a remarkable story.

RG3 said his competitive mentality dissuaded some teams around the league from signing him in 2017, saying they didn't want a competition for their current starter. In Baltimore, however, Griffin has embraced his role as a mentor all the while keeping the confidence that comes along with being selected second overall in the 2012 draft.

God forbid, but if anything does happen to Baltimore's young, mobile and exciting franchise centerpiece Jackson, Griffin will certainly be prepared.
