Rizzo: Nats’ release of Jeffress unrelated to on-field performance originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Nationals GM Mike Rizzo and manager Davey Martinez told reporters Monday that reliever Jeremy Jeffress was released for “personnel reasons” that weren’t related to on-field performance, but both declined to elaborate.
“We’re just going to stand by the statement I made yesterday,” Rizzo said on a Zoom call. “It’s a personnel matter, we’re not going to discuss it any further per our policy on personnel matters and we’re just going to keep it at that.”

Rizzo described the personnel matter as an “employment issue” that was not related to on-field performance. The comments come a day after Jeffress was released, which the team announced through a six-word tweet on its PR account.
Jeffress, 33, signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals this winter after being named an NL Reliever of the Year finalist in 2020 with the Chicago Cubs.
