Report: Ravens inform running back Mark Ingram of impending release originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Ravens have informed Mark Ingram of his impending release, a move widely expected, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Ingram is expected to be cut on Tuesday.
The move will save the Ravens $5 million against the cap in 2021 and allow running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards to be the clear 1-2 punch, like they were as the season wore on. This year, Edwards handled 144 carries and Dobbins 134, with Ingram a distant fourth on the team.
Earlier Monday night, Ingram took to social media to thank the Ravens for their support and love during his two seasons in Baltimore. He was quickly beloved in Baltimore, notably for his “Big Truss” press conference late last season in support of quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Ingram, 31, tallied just 72 carries in 2020 for 299 yards and two touchdowns, a steep dropoff from his Pro Bowl campaign in 2019 where he rushed for 1,018 yards on 202 carries. After a Week 5 game against the Bengals, he never carried the ball more than nine times.
He was a healthy scratch in four of the team’s last five games, including both playoff games, as the Ravens rolled with Dobbins and Edwards in the backfield with Justice Hill, who played on special teams, as the third running back.
Ingram signed as a free agent in Baltimore after the 2018 season and surpassed expectations in his first season as a Raven, as he and Jackson accounted for the primary options in the best rushing attack in league history.
The Ravens signed running back Ty’Son Williams to a futures contract on Monday night, as the team will add him into the mix for the offseason.
