The Rangers have just three games left in their season and were eliminated from playoff contention with Monday’s loss, but Davidson hadn’t yet hit the two-year mark on the job. Gorton had rebuilt the Rangers into a talented team that is undoubtedly on the rise in the Eastern Conference.
Friedman also reported that owner James Dolan was unhappy with the progress of the season and wanted quicker results. He appointed former assistant GM Chris Drury as the president and general manager.
The Capitals and Rangers will play tonight at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is at 7 pm on NBC Sports Washington.
