Derrius Guice reportedly has hired prominent Virginia criminal defense attorney Peter D. Greenspun to represent him against domestic violence charges.
Greenspun has experience with high-profile clients. He once represented John Allen Muhammad, the man commonly referred to as the "D.C. Sniper" who terrorized the region with a spate of shootings in October of 2002.
Guice was arrested Friday on one count of strangulation, a felony, as well as three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property. He was released by Washington nearly immediately after the news became public.
According to The Washington Post, Greenspun entered the jail shortly after Guice's arrest on Frida. Greenspun declined to comment as he left.
Greenspun has more than 30 years of experience in trying cases. He has also represented famed NBA broadcaster Marv Albert.
According to his website, Greenspun was listed as the top Virginia lawyer in December 2011. He has also been listed in the Best Lawyers in America since 1999 for "white-collar and non-white-collar criminal defense," and was listed by Virginia Business as a member of "The Legal Elite."
Guice was one of Washington's most promising offensive players, a 2018 second-round draft pick who was healthy and set to enter the 2020 season in a crowded running back room with Adrian Peterson, Bryce Love and rookie Antonio Gibson in the backfield. Injuries had stalled his career, but optimism surrounded him this summer from his teammates and the coaching staff. That is all gone and he will rely on Greenspun and his team to clear his name or mitigate the punishment. It's a shocking fall from grace.
