Report: Dan Snyder ‘will be seen as a pariah’ if Redskins don’t change name

After various calls for action by the public and numerous sponsors, the Washington Redskins plan to conduct a thorough review of their team's name.

That review is reportedly expected to result in a name change for the franchise, which according to Mike Freeman, could help owner Dan Snyder avoid significant backlash.

Freeman reports from a league source that if Washington doesn't change their name from the Redskins, Snyder, "will be seen as a pariah in a world that is rapidly growing and evolving. There's no more tolerance for this. That era is over."

Over the last few days, FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo all requested that Washington changes its name. Nike removed all Redskins apparel from their website, while FedEx and PepsiCo issued formal requests for a change. The NFL had also been in contact with Snyder over the past few weeks regarding the team's controversial name.

"In the last few weeks we have had ongoing discussions with Dan [Snyder] and we are supportive of this important step," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

These calls for Washington to change their name come at a time where racial injustice has become a paramount societal issue. After George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, protests erupted across the globe demanding an end to police brutality the systematic oppression of Black people.

Since then, racial injustices of any kind have been put under a brighter light, including requests for Washington to change the name of its professional football team.
