Rapper Yo Gotti becomes minority owner of D.C. United originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Multiplatinum rapper and record executive Yo Gotti became one of four new minority owners of D.C. United this week, the team announced. Yo Gotti (born Mario Mims) joins former Ravens running back Mark Ingram II as part owners of one of MLS’ most decorated clubs.

Yo Gotti is not from the nation’s capital—rather Nashville, Tennessee—and rose to fame by releasing many smash hit singles including ‘Down in the DM’ (2016) and ‘Rake it Up’ (2017). He founded Collective Music Group (aka CMG Records) in the early 2010s and has since signed some of the brightest young musicians in the rap game such as Moneybagg Yo and 42 Dugg.
“I was introduced to the game by my son and watched how quickly it has grown in our country, so I’m honored to join the D.C. United ownership group,” Yo Gotti said via a D.C. United press release Monday. “I’ve long admired [D.C. United co-chairmen] Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan’s ambition and entrepreneurship and look forward to collaborating with them – and the entire ownership group – to further elevate D.C. United’s commitment to connecting soccer, entertainment, community, and culture. Together, we’re going to enhance fan experience and bring new and exciting events to Audi Field.”
Among the three other newly anointed minority owners of the club is Jake Silverstein, co-owner of Swansea City AFC, who currently play in the English Championship (one level below the Premier League). Adam Gerry, CEO of Granite Associates, Inc. and former owner of Houston Dynamo FC and local Washington, D.C. businessman Joe Mamo are the other two to join the list.
