JoJo Romero crushes Red Bull, then Juan Soto crushes homer originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Phillies’ bullpen has had a historically rough season in 2020, leaving their pitchers looking for every edge they can get as the season winds down.
Among the more unusual practices has been that of rookie JoJo Romero. The 24-year-old has been among the Phillies’ best relievers this season; he prepares for each outing by chugging a Red Bull and crushing it against his leg just before walking onto the field.
The chug and crush went viral last week, prompting Red Bull to send a gift package to Romero and the Phillies for them to enjoy. So sure enough, on Tuesday when he came in to pitch against the Nationals, there was the can once again.
One problem: Juan Soto.
Soto crushed a three-run, opposite-field homer on the first pitch Romero threw, giving Washington the lead in the bottom of the third in the second game of their doubleheader against Philadelphia.
