Penn State upends VCU on a broken play buzzer-beater originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Losing at the buzzer is one of the most gut-wrenching moments in all of sports. Losing at the buzzer after the opponent looked like they had a broken play is even worse.
The VCU Rams and the Penn State Nittany Lions went back-and-forth throughout a nonconference contest on Wednesday night. Penn State technically led most of the evening but the Rams always kept the game within arm's reach and appeared to be primed for a run.
Suddenly the Nittany Lions' offense that shot 41% on the evening went ice cold. VCU's pressing style of defense was finally paying off. After the 3:46 mark in the second half, Penn State only scored a mere point to allow the Rams to get back into the game. In the process, VCU had forced two turnovers and appropriately timed some fouls.
It was a 69-69 ballgame and overtime was on the horizon. As the Nittany Lions brought the ball across midcourt, it looked as if the Rams' defense had stymied them once again.
The designed play off the timeout had fallen apart... that is until Jamari Wheeler found junior Myles Dread for the buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
It was Dread's first points of the game that sealed the win.
Much of the game had been paced by PSU's Seth Lundy. His 32 points led the way along with his game-high five 3-pointers.
VCU was looking for its third top-100 KenPom victory on the season traveling into Happy Valley. The Rams are now 2-2 on the season, Penn State moves to 2-0.
