Nationals SS Trea Turner Gives Backstory Behind His Son's Middle Name, Dash

Trea Turner gives backstory behind son’s middle name, Dash originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Trea Turner is fast, and his son has the middle name to prove it.

The Nationals shortstop announced Feb. 12 that his wife, Kristen, had given birth to their first son, Beckham Dash Turner. It was a fitting name for the son of one of baseball’s most prolific base stealers, but Turner can’t take credit for the idea.

Speaking with reporters Tuesday for the first time since reporting to spring training, Turner admitted that a Nationals coach had come to him with the suggestion.

“Me and my wife just liked the name Beckham and we tried to think of a few names and then pick and we just couldn’t think of any other names we really liked,” Turner said on a Zoom call. “So we knew that was gonna be the first name but at one point last year, [bench coach Tim Bogar] came up to me and said, ‘You gotta name your kid something fast,’ and I’m like, ‘All right, whatever.’

“He goes, ‘You know Dash from “The Incredibles?” That’s what you should name him.’ I was like, ‘Well, I’m not going to name my kid first name Dash.’ But then we started thinking about it and as a middle name we thought it was pretty cool and it kind of flowed really well — or at least we thought so. And we went with it and we like it.”

Dash may not be his son’s first name, but the young Turner already appears destined to have some wheels just like his father.
