MPSSAA announces postponement of all high school sports in Maryland until January

There will be no high school sports in Maryland this fall and for the beginning of the winter.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) announced on Monday that all high school athletic competitions will be postponed until the start of the second semester, which begins in late January in the state.

Previously, MPSSAA had left the decision whether to hold athletic competitions this fall up to each country and local school system. Monday's announcement gives the state consistency and direction as a whole.

While no sports will be played for the remainder of 2020, MPSSAA does plan to conduct fall and winter sports competitions under a modified schedule in the spring of 2021. More information about that plan will come in the next few weeks, MPSSAA announced in the statement.

MPSSAA's decision comes just a few days after the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference WCAC), home to private schools across D.C., Maryland and Virginia, announced its postponement of all sports seasons until February.

The WCAC wasn't the only school system to have already postponed or cancel sports this fall.

In mid-July, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) announced the cancelation of all fall and winter sports in conjunction with the decision to move to a fully virtual format for the first semester of the school year. The week prior, the state of Virginia announced the postponement of all fall and winter sports that were deemed high-risk, while the District of Columbia announced all interscholastic sports were postponed until January.
