Lerner says 'never any doubt' on Davey World Series promise originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Friday the Washington Nationals agreed to a multi-year contract extension with Davey Martinez, making him the longest tenured manager in team history.
Martinez was hired in the winter of 2017 after Dusty Baker was not let go, and according to Nationals Managing Principal Owner Mark Lerner there was never a doubt about the job Martinez would do in D.C.
“Three years ago when we selected Davey to be our Manager, he made a promise to our fans that he would bring a World Championship back to Washington, D.C.,” Lerner said in a press release.
“There was never any doubt in my mind that he would make that dream a reality. Davey’s determination and unwavering support of his players is admirable. We are so fortunate to have him leading our clubhouse each and every day.”

The franchise took home its first ever World Series trophy in 2019 and it was the first World Series championship for a D.C.-based team since the Washington Senators won it back in 1924. Mind you, that championship came after the team started the season 19-31 with many calling for Martinez to lose his job.
It's fair to say the Nats manager earned every bit of this new deal.
