Juan Soto Robs Didi Gregorius of Home Run With Leaping Grab

Nationals outfielder Juan Soto has quietly been building a case for a Gold Glove this season, making most of the plays required of him but not always filling the highlight reel with flashy displays of defensive prowess.

That is, until Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius tried to hit a ball out of Nationals Park on Thursday afternoon.

According to Statcast, Gregorius’s flyball traveled 373 feet and had an expected batting average of .330. None of those numbers mattered to Soto, who pulled the ball back from over the wall to keep the Nationals’ three-run lead intact.

Soto was wearing Fernando Tatís Jr.’s name-brand sunglasses when he made the play; the Nationals’ young star posted a picture of them on Instagram after receiving them earlier that day. It appears Tatís’s flashy play style rubbed off a bit on Soto.

After a play like that, perhaps the glasses will stick around for a while.
