John Thompson’s final interviews to be included in documentary originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The late John Thompson Jr.’s life and legacy will be recognized in a documentary co-produced by SLAM sister studio RTG Features, the company announced Wednesday on Instagram.
The documentary will reportedly include the final interviews that the former Georgetown head basketball coach ever gave, as well as interviews with “former players, journalists, influential leaders and D.C. icons,” according to Deadline. No release date for the documentary has been announced.
Thompson, who died Aug. 30 at 78 years old, coached at Georgetown for 27 years, leading the Hoyas to the 1984 national championship as well as three Final Fours and seven Big East titles. He earned a bronze medal as the head coach of the 1988 U.S. men’s national team and is considered a pioneer for minority coaches throughout basketball.
After retiring from coaching in 1999, Thompson began a second career as a radio and TV personality. He spent 13 years hosting sports talk radio for ESPN 980 in Washington, where he developed a reputation for managing to snag high-profile guests ranging from Kobe Bryant to Jesse Jackson.
The documentary will be among the first projects for RTG Features, which will co-produce it with May 3rd Films.
