Here Are the Statistical Leaders of the Washington Football Team Era

The statistical leaders of the Washington Football Team era originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

In less than two weeks, the Washington Football Team will stop being the Washington Football Team and instead become the Washington Commanders/Admirals/Hogs/Red Hogs/Armada/Brigade/InsertNameYouSawOnRedditHere. That means it's an ideal time to look back on the WFT era and tally up the leaders in various statistical categories from the past two regular seasons.

Sure, the club's name might've been temporary, but these records will stand forever (and will also come in handy if you ever want to show off your knowledge of an obscure part of NFL history).

Offensive stats

  • In all, six quarterbacks suited up for the Washington Football Team, but Taylor Heinicke is the one who played the most. Therefore, he'll go down as the guy with the most starts (15), most passing yards (3,556), most touchdowns (21) and most interceptions (15). Logan Thomas, however, will finish with the highest passer rating (118.7) thanks to his trick-play completion in Dallas in 2020.
  • Antonio Gibson's 1,832 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns are easily the top marks for WFT running backs. His 40-yard rush in 2020 is the longest from the last two years, too, with Heinicke's 38-yard scamper in 2021 falling just short of that number.
  • Unsurprisingly, Terry McLaurin dominates when it comes to the wide receivers; his 164 catches and 2,171 receiving yards lead the way there. As for receiving touchdowns, he and Thomas are tied at 9, though Thomas posted his scores in 10 fewer appearances. JD McKissic, meanwhile, checks in with the second-most grabs (123) and yards (986) behind McLaurin, which simultaneously shows how good McKissic's been and how little other wideouts have produced. Finally, Gibson's 73-yard touchdown in Buffalo in 2021 is the longest catch in the existence of the Washington Football Team.

Defensive/special teams stats

  • No Washington Football Teamer has had more interceptions than Kendall Fuller (5) since 2020, but if Bobby McCain could've faced New York's Jake Fromm for another quarter or two, he might've been able to overtake Fuller. McCain, Cole Holcomb and Kam Curl are all tied at the top for pick-sixes with 1 apiece.
  • Montez Sweat's 14 sacks are more than any other Burgundy and Gold defender. The only other guy in double digits is Jonathan Allen, who got 11 in the WFT days.
  • Tackle stats vary from site to site, but according to the always-quality Pro Football Reference, Holcomb and his 214 combined tackles are the most from the past couple of campaigns.
  • Current Chargers kicker Dustin Hopkins knocked in 39 field goals for the Washington Football Team, but Joey Slye (55 yards) had the longest single field goal. As for Chris Blewitt, he owns the record for most kicks that had absolutely no chance of going through the uprights despite kicking in just two matchups.
  • DeAndre Carter registered more kick returns (36), kick return yards (904) and kick return touchdowns (1) than any other WFT member. Steven Sims, though, has more punt returns (24) and punt return yards (160) than Carter.

Miscellaneous stats

  • Garrett Gilbert (1) had the most Tuesday starts for a Washington Football Team quarterback.
  • Keith Ismael started on 5 occasions, which is more than any other fourth-string center in WFT history.
  • Alex Armah's 3 offensive snaps paces all Washington Football Team fullbacks.
