Nine-year NBA veteran and Georgetown alum Greg Monroe is returning to Washington after signing with the Capital City Go-Go, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

In signing with the G-League affiliate of the Washington Wizards, Monroe will have a chance to improve his contract status from a simple G-League contract to a two-way contract which would enable him to suit up for Washington. Of course, that is no guarantee. It will depend entirely on Monroe’s performance with the Go-Go. Few G-League players are granted two-way contracts.
Monroe, 31, spent two seasons at Georgetown, where he earned first-team All-Big East in 2010 before being drafted seventh overall by the Detroit Pistons in 2010. He has had an up-and-down pro career, however.
Monroe spent five years in Detroit before making stops in Milwaukee, Toronto, Boston, Phoenix, and Philadelphia, ultimately playing for Bayern Munich and Khimki Moscow in Europe from 2019-21. Monroe was a tenacious big man early in his NBA days, at one point averaging about 16 points and 10 rebounds in over 30 minutes per game for the Pistons.
His career had tapered somewhat since then. He last suited up in the NBA for the 76ers during the 2019 postseason. He put up a total of 21 points and 13 rebounds in six games during Philadelphia’s second-round loss to Toronto, the eventual NBA champion.
Now a member of the Go-Go, Monroe has been given a chance to revive his American basketball career. He will suit up under first-year head coach Mike Williams as Capital City begins their 2021-22 campaign Friday night at home vs. the Westchester Knicks.
