Garrison Mathews Reportedly Signing Qualifying Offer to Stay in Washington

Garrison Mathews reportedly returning to Wizards next season originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

The Wizards have been active in the opening days of NBA free agency, re-signing Davis Bertans to a 5-year, $80 million deal and bringing in forward Anthony Gill from the EuroLeague.

They also added center Robin Lopez, and now, they've retained backup shooting guard option Garrison Mathews as well.

According to reports, Mathews will be signing his qualifying offer, which gives the Wizards another option at shooting guard, alongside Jerome Robinson. Bradley Beal is of course entrenched as the starter and face of the franchise, but after many years of poor bench play the Wizards will be happy to retain depth in their reserves.

Washington is running out of roster spots, so it remains to be seen where Tommy Sheppard and company will turn for any further additions to the 2020-21 squad. But Mathews was a good find for the Wizards, and it's always important to add shooting.
