Former Nats manager Davey Johnson in hospital battling coronavirus originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Former Nationals manager Davey Johnson is currently hospitalized as he battles the coronavirus, former New York Mets PR man Jay Horowitz shared on Twitter.
Johnson, 77, began working in Washington in 2006 when he was named a consultant for the team. He later advised general manager Mike Rizzo starting in 2009 before taking over as the manager for the Nationals after Jim Riggleman resigned in the middle of the 2011 season.
In 2012, Johnson left his lasting legacy on the organization by leading Washington to 98 wins and an NL East division title. It was a franchise-record in terms of regular-season victories and the first division title in Washington after the franchise moved over from Montreal.
Johnson was named NL Manager of the Year for his efforts and returned to lead the Nationals for the 2013 season before announcing his retirement.
Prior to making his mark in Washington, Johnson led the New York Mets to their second World Series title in 1986. Johnson also had stints as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.
As a player, Johnson won two World Series titles with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966 and 1970. A four-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove Winner, Johnson also suited up for the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs.
