Is the third time the charm?

The XFL will be returning in the spring of 2022, according to owner Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, the third time the league has attempted to put together a full season.

Johnson announced the news in a one-minute hype video on Twitter that he posted Thursday morning.

The news comes just over six months after the league suspended all operations and laid off its employees in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

XFL 2.0, which had begun its season in February, was off to a promising start before the pandemic hit. The original version of the XFL lasted just one season in 2001.

The league was sold to an ownership group headlined by Johnson in August, with the hope the actor and former wrestler could restore the league in a post-coronavirus world. That seems to be the plan, based on the league's hope to return in 2022, rather than next year.

"Our work is cut out for us, but we wouldn't have it any other way," Johnson said in the video.
