Details emerge in murder case involving a Georgetown football player originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
A Georgetown University football player arrested in connection with a murder in Washington will be extradited to the District by federal authorities.
Dijon Williams, a senior wide receiver from Atlanta, was located and arrested in Georgia on Monday by United States Marshals, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Williams was arrested for his alleged role in a July 21, 2020 homicide in the 4100 block of 14th Street Northwest.
In a statement provided to NBC Sports Washington early Tuesday morning, the University said it is aware of the allegations against Williams.
“Georgetown University became aware of charges against Dijon Williams this evening. While we are working to learn more information, we will cooperate fully with any investigation and we stand prepared to offer resources to members of our community who may be affected by this news. At this time, there are no indications that the alleged crime took place near the University.”
Four other males and two females were also arrested in Gwinnett County, Ga. on unrelated weapons and drug charges, the Gwinnett County Sherrif's Office said.
Williams went to Miller Grove High School in nearby Lithonia, Ga., according to a biography on the Georgetown University athletic department website. He was a team captain for Miller Grove as a senior, the biography states.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is investigating the death of Nurudeen Thomas, 30, of Greenbelt, Md. Fourth District officers responded at 5:04 a.m. on July 21 to reports of gun shots. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded and transported Thomas to a local hospital for treatment, according to MPD. Thomas was pronounced dead.
Georgetown’s football season was postponed on July 13 when the Patriot League canceled all fall sports because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Only a small number of students remain on campus with the vast majority studying virtually for the fall semester because of the pandemic.
Williams played in 10 games as a freshman at Georgetown, missed his sophomore year due to injury and returned for five games in 2019 as a junior.
Williams has been suspended by the football team pending the results of the ongoing investigation. That is triggered automatically for any student-athlete at Georgetown after an arrest and they are subject to further disciplinary action under the student code of conduct, which could result in dismissal from the University.
