A 'Primetime" intro for Deion Sanders at Jackson State originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Deion Sanders has been a busy man these past few months.
After leaving NFL Network for Barstool Sports in August, where he has his own podcast "21st and Prime" and appears on the "Pardon My Take" podcast each week following Sunday's games, Sanders is now a head coach, too.
Sanders is now the head coach at Jackson State University, a historically black school in Mississippi. He announced the move on his podcast on Monday morning after a week of speculation regarding the hire in an episode called "The Announcement."
"Start calling me, 'Coach Prime' from now on," Sanders said in a video on his Twitter, "because I'm not going to answer to anything else."
Hours after making that announcement on his new podcast, Sanders was given some special treatment upon his arrival at the morning press conference to make the move official.
The school's marching band getting some reps in during a postponed season, a police escort, and a stylish suit made the occasion all the more special for the Hall of Fame defensive back. Jackson's Channel 16 WAPT News sports director Joe Cook captured the scene first hand.
Sander played in 188 games for five teams over a Hall-of-Fame 14-year career with 53 interceptions. In 2000, Sanders wore the Burgundy and Gold in Washington. As one of the best two-sport athletes of all time, Sanders played in parts of nine MLB seasons and hit 39 home runs.
When asked on his podcast why Sanders is embarking on this new role, he said, "God called me to Jackson State."
Sanders' "primetime" entrance as the new head coach, his terrific playing career and his flashy style and talent for punditry will bring tons of attention to the HBCU in Jackson. While speculation was building around whether he would leave his post at Barstool for this new gig, confirming the move on his podcast surely means he'll stick around during Jackson State's offseason.
The two-sport phenom is more than used to multi-tasking, though. As an offensive coordinator for a Cedar Hill, Texas high school called Trinity Christian School, Sanders will finish his obligations there before turning his attention to college coaching. Jackson State's season was postponed to the spring because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The unveiling came on Sept. 21 for the former legendary No. 21, as Jackson State's 21st head football coach.
