Here are Tom Wilson’s contract details with the Capitals
Wilson’s tenure in Washington began in Washington when he signed his three-year entry-level contract. The forward didn’t receive a long-term deal when his rookie contract was up. Instead, the Capitals provided him with a two-year $4 million contract extension bridge contract in 2016.
After that bridge contract was up, the Capitals didn’t hesitate in committing long-term to Wilson, giving him a six-year contract worth $31 million in 2018.
Becoming a dad to a rescue dog
Bringing a dog into a new family is a challenging task, and last year Wilson welcomed Halle, an eight-week-old black lab mix, who has become a staple in the Capitals forward’s life.
She makes regular appearances on Wilson’s Instagram account, and when talking about Halle, the 27-year-old stated that he’s enjoying his time being a dad to his rescue dog.
“She’s a smart dog, but there’s times definitely where you have to take a breath and clean up after her,” Wilson said. “Just try to go through the ins and outs of learning how to be a dad to a cute little pup. So it’s been fun.”
More than a physical presence
There’s no denying that Wilson brings physicality to the Capitals squad and sometimes crosses the edge leading to suspensions by the NHL. Nonetheless, the winger is a valuable forward who uses his size to get under opponents' skin and skill to play alongside top players like Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom.
“He’s always learning. He’s always been a guy that’s played really physical, and any team in the league would love to have players like that, like Tom, who’s big and strong and can score goals, and he can hit, and he can fight, and everything he does is powerful,” Peter Laviolette said last year on 106.7 The Fan’s Sports Junkies.
Wilson has produced 40+ points and 20+ goals in two of the past three seasons, so there’s more to his game than just big hits, which is why it hurts when he’s out of the lineup due to injury or suspension. This season it appears as though he will reach those marks again with eight goals and 23 points through 24 games.
