Alex Smith Has Yet to Find His Limitations as He Returns From Gruesome Leg Injury

Washington quarterback Alex Smith was officially removed from the team's PUP list and placed on the active roster on Sunday, an incredible step in the 36-year-old's recovery from the gruesome leg injury he suffered nearly 20 months ago.

With Smith's back on the active roster, many now expect him to compete with Dwayne Haskins for Washington's starting QB gig. However, the Washington Post released a story Monday morning after speaking with Smith's physician, who explained that the quarterback requires a brace to aid the movement of his foot

If Smith has mobility issues, that would likely hamper his chances of becoming the team's starter or even stepping on the football field again.

But just hours later, Smith spoke to Washington Senior VP of Media and Content Julie Donaldson and said that he has yet to find what his limitations are as he continues to recover from his injury.

"At some point, I'm going to find out what my limitations are," Smith said. "But I haven't found them yet."

Smith's response came after Donaldson asked the passer what motivated him to return to football. For Smith, it was easy: he knew that if he could play quarterback in the NFL again, there were few other things in life that he wouldn't be able to do.

"In the bigger aspect of life, I'm 36 years old," Smith said. "I have the rest of my life in front of me. And selfishly, I'm even doing this for that, as crazy as that sounds. I know if I can go out there and play quarterback, I can do anything else in life."

Most people who have gone through what Smith has over the past year and a half would have hung up the cleats and called it a career. But if we've learned anything about Smith over that span, it's that he's a fighter and his competitive spirit alone was going to will him back to playing in the NFL again.

And less than two years removed from nearly losing his leg (and almost his life), Smith is ready to play.
