Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was fined $5,000 Thursday, the maximum amount allowed, for his spear of Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic.

Both received penalties on the play, which occurred in the third period. The Capitals won 2-1 in a shootout. The two had a history last night, as Frederic seemingly wanted to drop the gloves with Ovechkin, who wasn’t interested in doing so.
Ovechkin has seven goals and 10 assists in 18 games so far this season. The Capitals and Bruins will play once again on Friday night at TD Garden.
