Haynesworth a Top Defender?

Are you sitting down? Good.

Pro Football Focus has named Albert Haynesworth a top three defender.

“Fair to say things haven’t gone exactly to plan in Washington for the former Titan. Staggeringly though, when he’s been on the field he continues to be as good a DT as there is out there (even though he may be as scrutinized a defensive player as there is). Despite the pretty low sack totals in Washington, in his first year there, he was a top five defensive tackle and not that far off his best year. Even last year he generated pressure in the sub package defense. If you can get him playing his best then he’s a bargain whatever the price.”

Notice the qualifying phrases “when he’s been on the field” and “if you can get him playing his best”. Not exactly justification for making him a top three defender. And don’t get us started with that “bargain whatever the price” nonsense.

This list is based on a 4-3 defense, which we all know is Haynesworth’s favorite place to be. But he hasn’t played in a consistent 4-3 in two years, so we’re calling shenanigans on this ranking.

As far as we’re concerned, Haynesworth doesn’t belong in the top three on any defensive list, unless he’s defending a plate of nachos.
