Junior welterweight Lamont Peterson, who used to sleep on the streets of D.C., brought championship boxing back to D.C. with his fight against Amir Khan -- and he pulled off the upset.
Now he has the key to the city.
“Lamont now has the key to the city, and Anthony, I want you to know that we have two locks down here, so we’re waiting to give out the next key,” Mayor Vincent Gray said, referring to Peterson’s brother, who is another promising professional boxer.
Peterson won the unified WBA/IBF title with the Khan fight, a controversial split decision that likely won’t be the last time the fighters face each other.
“I would just like to thank D.C. - period,” Peterson said. “Just thank the whole D.C. and just say that today I’m proud to be a Washingtonian.”
