Red Bulls Keeper Scores from Own Half

by Michael Cardillo

Who doesn't love a good flukly, artificial turf aided soccer goal?

Saturday night in his MLS debut, keeper Danny Cepero scored off a long free kick in a match against the Columbus Crew in a 3-1 win. Part of you has to feel bad for Crew keeper Andy Gruenebaum, who was chumpatized by the hop. Aside from more injuries, freakish plays like this are a side result of playing on turf.

The 23-year-old Cepero only started because RBNY No. 1 Jon Conway had been suspended by the league 10 games for using a banned over-the-counter supplement. Let's hope Cepero bought a couple lottery tickets on the way home.

In the big picture it helped the Red Bulls maintain the final MLS playoff spot on 39 points. The Red Bulls have the tiebreaker with Real Salt Lake, which is also on 39. New York plays at Chicago on Thursday on ESPN2, so maybe Cepero can try to duplicate his feat.
