Now That Matt Millen Is on His Way, Jon Kitna Doesn't Think He's the Problem in Detroit

The good news keeps on rollin' out of Detroit: first, the team is guaranteed not to lose this week (yeah, they're on their bye), and Matt Millen has been "Tatum Bell-ed," thus insuring an end to the futility that has become the Lions organization.

Maybe that's overstating it a bit -- it's hard to undo more than eight years of hardcore ineptitude in a season -- but, if nothing else, it's a move in the right direction. Plus, the fans can take solace in the fact that owner William Clay Ford Sr. has lifted the moratorium on ignoring the people who buy season tickets just so he can say he has a dancing bear as president/general manager.

Whatever, Millen's out and the Lions are now about the business of turning things around. First up: each player taking accountability for their performance:

"I don't think I am the problem," [quarterback Jon] Kitna said Tuesday before breaking for a five-day vacation during the Lions' bye week. "I am all about winning. If they feel that it's necessary, then so be it, but I don't think I am the problem. I think I am into these games."

Evidently, there's a chance Kitna could find himself on the bench when the team reconvenes next week. Starting 0-3 and blowing the home opener to the Packers will lead to such talk, even in Detroit. To his credit, Kitna will make excuses till the very end. When pressed to explain why his numbers have gone down compared to last season, he offered this pithy assessment: "When you are down 18 or 21 points, your accuracy is going to go down..."

My advice: staying the course is overrated, Jon.
