Julian Tavarez recently compared signing with the Nationals to being in a bar during the late hours looking for a companion. Apparently, Joe Beimel was in the same bar still looking while Tavarez was leaving the establishment. Turns out Tavarez's companion has plenty to go around, as the Nationals have signed Beimel to a $2 million contract for one season.
Ironically, Beimel once made headlines while actually in a bar when he cut his hand on a glass putting him out for the 2006 playoffs. If he does that again and cost the Nationals a pitcher in the playoffs, then ... wait, that would mean the Nationals would be in the playoffs, so I'm sure you Nats fans would take that in a heartbeat.
And don't you find it ironic that the city of Washington is benefitting from our sagging economy? First the Nats were able to land Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham in a trade with the Marlins, a trade you could argue the Marlins would have done in a good economy, but the bad economy made it a necessity. Then Adam Dunn and Joe Beimel fall in their laps in moves where if the economy was good, you probably would have seen them somewhere else. These are four decent pieces to add to a team that was an afterthought last season.
Are they enough to put the Nationals in playoff contention? I'm not so sure about that. But if other things go right, those four players could make the Nationals much more of a factor than last year, which honestly shouldn't be too hard.
