If Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg ever step into the cage together, it would be the biggest fight in the history of women's MMA. But now that EliteXC is out of business, is the fight ever going to happen?
MMA Convert passes along good news from Fighters Only: Both Carano and Cyborg say they plan to make it happen by ending up with the same promotion just as soon as the EliteXC bankruptcy proceedings are over. Of course, until all the ugliness surrounding the EliteXC bankruptcy is over, we can't say for sure that anything is going to happen. But it does look like this fight will take place.
So who will promote it? I asked Dana White two weeks ago whether there was any chance that either UFC or WEC would promote a women's fight, and he was adamant that they would not. So Zuffa is out of the running. And Affliction is probably out of the running, too, because Carano is closely aligned with Randy Couture, who is in the middle of a battle with Affliction.
That leaves Strikeforce, which is promoting Kim Couture's next fight and would love to get Carano-Cyborg as it moves toward a live show on NBC. Strikeforce is a well-run organization that values women's MMA and would do a good job promoting Carano vs. Cyborg. Let's hope it happens.
