Among numerous others, the Cubs have long had a question lingering over their roster: What to do with Felix Pie? The young center fielder's offensive game has yet to impress at the pro level, Lou Piniella has no patience for developing hitters, and Jim Hendry spent all offseason signing and curating outfielders. What to do, then, with him?
Today, the Cubs found their answer: a trade with the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Garrett Olson and Henry Williamson:
The Cubs must believe the Jake Peavy trade is back on, because they had no interest in Olson. As for Williamson, he was a 14th-round pick in the 2007 draft who went 0-1 with two saves, a 3.72 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 20 games last year with short-season Single-A Aberdeen and Single-A Delmarva.
Whether the two pitching prospects pan out is almost an afterthought (though Olson's two years of duty have showed him to be a thoroughly average arm). The question of what to do with Pie has been answered. Unfortunately for the center fielder, and Cubs fans who once thought him to be the club's five-tool star of the future, the answer is more like a whimper than a bang.
