Bengals Tell Marvin Lewis He Can Stay in Cincinnati As Long As He Wants

NFL.com's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Bengals have told head coach Marvin Lewis that he is welcome to stay on the job for as long as he wants.

Very quietly, Bengals management has informed head coach Marvin Lewis that he is welcome to coach in Cincinnati as long as wants, according to a high-level Bengals source. It is as strong an indication to date that ownership has absolutely no plans to fire its head coach, certainly not now.

Why should they have to tell Lewis this? I mean, why would you want to dump a coach who is 0-5 this year? He has a 42-44 overall record in his six seasons in Cincinnati. Six seasons that have brought one winning season and one playoff game (a home loss to the Steelers in 2005).

What organization wouldn't want to have a coach they can undermine by re-signing players he kicked off the team?

He has a contract through 2010, so it isn't like this will last forever. It will just feel like it.
