It’s National Guinness World Record Day, which means that people all over the world will be trying to make and break crazy records. It got us thinking. How many official world records do DMV athletes hold?
We did some digging and it turns out we’ve had some talented players come through the District. Some of these records we're proud of (hello, DeAngelo Hall and your interception record). Others, like the '74-'75 Caps with the least amount of wins recorded in a season, we'd love to see taken over by another city.
Good or bad, our teams have definitely earned their place in the books.
NATIONALS
Ivan Rodriguez set a Major League Baseball record for catchers by playing in 2,390 career games with the Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, and Washington Nationals since he made his major league debut at age 19 on June 20, 1991.
CAPITALS
During the 2010-11 season Alex Ovechkin became the fastest player to reach 2,000 careers shots on goal since the NHL started keeping the statistic in 1967. Ovechkin reached the mark in 4 1/2 seasons -- no one else has done it in six. He had 288 of them go into the net as goals.
Chris Bourque, son of the NHL Hall of Famer Ray Bourque, scored five goals to help power the United States past Norway, 11-2, in an opening game at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, in Vancouver, British Columbia on Dec. 26, 2005. Bourque, a second-round draft pick of the Washington Capitals, scored twice on the power play and once short-handed, equaling the USA Hockey record with five goals in one game first set by Wally Chapman (University of Minnesota), who scored five goals in a 12-3 victory against Switzerland, on 3 January 1984.
Mike Green set a record for defensemen by scoring a goal in eight straight games during the 2008-09 season, with his goal in a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 14, 2009.
The most consecutive NHL games played is 964 by Doug Jarvis playing for the Montreal Canadiens, the Capitals and Hartford Whalers from Oct. 8, 1975, to Oct. 10, 1987.
The most penalty minutes amassed in NHL playoff games is 729 by Dale Hunter playing for the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Colorado Avalanche from 1980-99.
The longest NHL shootout lasted 15 rounds. Marek Malik scored the winning goal on the 30th attempt with a trick shot fooling Olaf Kolzig to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 25, 2005.
The fewest wins record by a team in a single NHL season is eight by the Washington Capitals in 1974-75.
REDSKINS
Ola Kimrin, a placekicker, played in five games at 32 years old for the Washington Redskins, during the 2004 season, becoming the oldest rookie ever to play in an NFL game.
The NFL record for most interceptions recorded in a game by an individual is 4 held by 18 players, most recently accomplished by DeAngelo Hall while playing for the Redskins against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 24, 2010.
WIZARDS
The most basketballs dunked in a single jump was three by JaVale McGee during the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest at the 2011 NBA All-Star Game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 19, 2011. McGee jumped with two basketballs in his possession before dunking each and receiving a third basketball to dunk via alley-oop from teammate John Wall.
MYSTICS
Katie Smith has scored 785 three-point field goals playing for the Minnesota Lynx, Detroit Shock, and Washington Mystics since 1999.
