Chelsea and AS Roma in D.C. Next Saturday for Friendly

D.C. soccer fans are in for a real treat next Saturday.

Chelsea and AS Roma – two of Europe’s most prominent futbol clubs – will be playing a friendly at RFK Stadium on Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. Get your scarfs, flags and vuvuzelas ready.

For the uninitiated, Chelsea is the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner and the 2013 Europa League champion. The Blues are one of the most respectable clubs in Europe, featuring some of the biggest names in the futbol world.

These names include: England’s Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole; Spain’s Fernando Torres and Juan Mata; Belgium’s Eden Hazard; and the Czech Republic’s Petr Cech. Rumor has it the club is trying to acquire Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney as well.

Chelsea is currently in the states competing in the International Champions Cup, a tournament featuring other prestigious clubs like AC Milan and Juventus being played in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, New York and Indianapolis.

Roma is the underdog here, though it boasts some star power of its own. The team features U.S. national team midfielder Michael Bradley and Francesco Totti, the man who led Italy to the 2006 World Cup title with the most assists in the tournament.

The Italian club is on a North American tour, making stops in Kansas City to play the MLS all-stars and Ontario to face Toronto FC before heading to D.C.

Tickets are still available on Ticketmaster for as low as $35.
